Unhappy I need an automatic log on

I am using fluxbox on a machine running debian 3.1. What file do I have to edit and how so that I can log on automatically (without first authenticating myself) Please I need the file and maybe the howto but not the GUI tool that can acomplish this.

Secondly where can I find the system boot log file and a log file for applications that do crash so that i can determine the cause of the problem?

your help is of paramount help
thanx

Try the command 'gdmsetup', you can configure it in GUI mode, or see if u find a file /etc/gdm/gdm.conf to configure it.

'dmesg' command returns the system boot log and logs for application crush etc are usually found in /var/log/messages.

Try this command 'tail -f /var/log/messages'

I don't use debian, so I am unsure about the commands. Let me know whether these worked for u.
