I need a Linux distro thats works with a 64 bit proccesor

That's what it is compiled for. You could also use a 32 bit distro but it will not take advantage of the 64bit architecture.

Yeah it'll work. SuSE also has a 64 bit distro.

Mandrake has a 64 version with the 2.6 kernel. Easy to use easy to install

How good are the 64 bit distros at the moment?

I have a AMD64 but am running a 32 bit kernel with !G of ram and 3200 processor with a S-ATA drive.

I'm using the newest Kanotix 64 and its very nice. Try it out with the live cd and install via live cd. I've tried several other 64 bit distros but I did'nt keep them long.

I'm using Gentoo AMD64 on a Athlon64 3000, its nice, geekish and all but using it as a desktop system there is no significant difference in terms of how fast applications load etc, and many packages do not yet work on it(most of the major ones do though)

I'm using Debian right now with a AMD64 3000. I have not noticed one lick of difference in speed between the 64 and 32 versions. The only problem is a lack of software compatibility for the 64.

hmm, looks like 32 bit is just as fast however I will have a peep at the live cd.

I'm also running gentoo in 64-bit on a 3000+ and it seems to be fast enough for all my desktop needs. Software compatibility is an issue, because things like shockwave don't work, as do some libraries. That doesn't really bother me, however, and there is a small boost in compile time as shown by linuxhardware.org, so i think i'll stick with 64-bit for the time being.

Also, if you want to have your cake and eat it too, in gentoo you can create a 32-bit environment that you can chroot into anytime you need to run a 32-bit app.
