I installed Slack... now i have massive questions.

Ok guys. I installed the first cd of slackware. But now i cant boot to my xp drive. How do i get it back? Do i just have to reboot off the xp cd or can i do something more simple?

I am running fluxbox. How do i change it to the normal gnome desktop? Dont know crap about flux.

Help!!! I did my taxes on xp and i gotta get it back on... Thanks

"But now i cant boot to my xp drive. How do i get it back? Do i just have to reboot off the xp cd or can i do something more simple?"

You just need to edit lilo to include the option to boot Windows. You need to know two things. 1. Which drive has XP on it (hda, hdb, and so on), 2. What partition on said drive is XP (should be the name of the drive with a 1 after it in the case of Windows, i.e. hda1, hdb1).

So assuming XP is on your first hard drive, you'd want to add these lines to the end of /etc/lilo.conf (you'll need to be root) with the text editor of your choice:

other=/dev/hda1
label="Windows"

Save it. Then (also as root) do a

/sbin/lilo

Then, when you reboot, LILO should give you the option to select winXP.

"I am running fluxbox. How do i change it to the normal gnome desktop?"

First you need to install it. Gnome is on the second Slack CD, so if you only installed the first CD you don't have Gnome on your drive to run.

You can either install it by hand by using installpkg on the .tgz files for Gnome, use Swaret to download and install them for you, or use the Dropline Gnome installer.

The Dropline installer has the advantages of giving you a completely updated version of Gnome, and of setting it up so Gnome will be run with 'startx' for you. Using Swaret to install Gnome is just as easy, but I'm guessing you'll have to have to run 'xwmconfig' to select Gnome yourself. I'm not sure if you need to be root for that or not.

Right-click empty desktop, select exit from the
pop-up menu? :)

To get gnome without the second CD you'll
need to grab the dropline installer from a slack-
mirror. It will then fetch all you need.

Cheers,
Tink

P.S.: Gnome sucks ... stick with Flux ;)
