I hope this is not such a stupid question!
Just installed Mandrake 8.0 everything seems to work ok (i think!) BUT, most of my directories are locked! this is a good thing right? I just hate having to "su" for such basic things, i trashed RH doin that! So what do i unlock? and what can i leave locked? but most importantly how do i unlock what is locked?
salamat po (thank you) in advance. |
if you're a newbie it's best to leave the permissions of the system files and/or directories as they are out-of-the-box.
there really isn't many reasons why you would need to change permissions of files and/or folders other than those in your home directory... by "unlocking" system files and/or directories you turn your linux into windows 98, almost... =) linux's "locking mechanism" is the key to having users that don't have to worry about doing anything that might damage the system... permissions in linux are managed with these commands: http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/chown.1.html http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/chmod.1.html good luck! |
Thanks for the quick reply Win32sux !
