I have two questions on Fedora Core 14

1. Is there a way to change the broken glass/monitor background on the login screen???

2. I have tried to login as root, but it will not accept the password, but if I login with my user name and need to change things that require root privileges the password works fine.

I worked a little back in 05 and 06 with FC4 and FC5 but nothing until now...

Thanks for any help you can give!

1) It's not Fedora Core any more, it's just Fedora.
2) Change your desktop background to something you want showing on the login screen, and check to make it the default. Then change your desktop background to your normal one but don't check to make it default.
3) Root login has been disabled for a long time, even FC4 was set like that. You do not need to login directly as root, under any normal circumstances. Use sudo or su - in a terminal for longer tasks or rely on the prompts for system management tasks in the GUI.

I must be missing something... On my F14 desktop under system/preferences/appearence then click on backgrounds, there is no way to make it default that I can see.

default for that user - yes

now for the just booted and NO user loged in yes screen
are you using fedora's plymouth ? ( default)

that is changed by hacking the intred and making a new one
there ARE NO gui settings for that in fedora using the fedora legacy grub
that was removed way back in fedora 8 with the rewrite of grub

All I can tell you is at the login screen it says:
Fedora release 14 (Laughlin)

Apparently this works to change the login background image.
