is this a statement?
you arent asking a question here.
give us information if you want help (to a _specific problem_)

read this thread about asking a question the best way in order to get results you are looking for.

- what distribution of linux is the computer running? ie SuSE, Mandriva, Ubuntu (it will say when it boots up).
- what is the question(s)?

Agreed. Although you may not yet know it alnav89, there is some difference between Linux versions just like there is a difference between different brands of computers or home theater systems.

You might also describe what you see. Is it a line of text? Is it a screen with a spaces to fill in a username or password?

And please, don't dual post.

You should also know that Linux is a different operating system from Windows, just like Mac is. For the most part, you won't be able to run any Windows program on Linux, although there are programs similar to Windows programs that you can use. It seems like that is what you are talking about with your mention of cds.

For the absolute new-to-Linux user, google up a copy of 'Newbies Linux Manual'. It got me started when I decided to make the switch from windows.

Then google up a copy of 'Rute Users Tutorial and Exposition'.

Both are good reads. You will learn quite a lot from them.
