i got songs, i got no audio

i recentlly installed debian on my laptop. i have a cirrus logig 46xx card. during boot sequence, ive seen it say 'card detected', and snd-46xx enabled or sumpthing like that
however, i got no audio. when i run xmms, i get a dialog box that says 'check to see if soundcard is configured properly, check no other program is blocking the soundcard'
the cd player utility runs, but no sound, and the volume control on gnome is fixed permanently to zero
i have no idea what to do. please help

There are several things that may be wrong with your system. Help me out with a little more information: What version of Debian are you running, and more importantly what kernel does it have? If you are aware of it, are you useing ALSA or OSS? If you are using GNOME, is ESD running ('ps aux|grep esd')? The output from 'lsmod' may help in diagnosing this situation as well.

Hope I can help
