I figure this a really Stupid question, but I must ask in terms of Windows v. Linux
Keep in mind I'm not attempting to propose antagonism, nor any sort of elitism, I'm just genuinely confused about a basic, well, function.
You see It's been a while since I have been thinking about the Linux OS, due to complicated circumstances, but whilst imagining about recreating retro devices with modern motherboards, (small things like the ZX spectrum and whatnot,) I found myself puzzling about certain elements that would need some retweaking. One of those things in particular would be an OS for it to run on. You see, the one sort of "Achilles heel," that never really seemed to slip my mind from any sort of Linux, always seemed to shoot back towards its Exacutable dysfunction. Don't get me wrong about its native Command line being fully capable to somewhat suffice, it's just that I kinda expected too much I suppose out of the OS. Yes Wine is a decent program, but without the "Native Capability," forcing it to have to use Crossover runarounds, I find it overall frustrating to say the least. I say all this because I do wish to eventually envelope interesta into studying how to develop entire operating systems, motherboards, and the like, as a sort of IT engineer, (an "inventor," if you will,) working on modifying new and modernizing old hardware with some respect of operating system to carry with it. (Preferably a slightly modified Android based Kernel to spare me some time development time.) I mean overall, I'd love to develop a Moc-based MS Windows DOS Machine perforated through Linux, having the basic functionality as any modern day windows 10 OS, with mouse and desktop Integrated functionality, you know? In the end, until I fully can understand coding, and reverse engineering, I feel this sort of Dream is nothing more than an idea just floating about in the confines and vast empty space of the internet. As I must admit, as I reflect on myself I must be a Jack of all potential, but procrastinator on congruent planning. At least that's what I believe from my rushed around thought. But yes I am curious to this conundrum with any insight on this topic, thank you. |
Linux has been around for a while and supports an amazing range of HW not just back in time but almost an kind of PC, laptop, android phone , supercomputers and more (eg some n/w gear).
This because the src is always avail. This OS http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ helps you to build the OS literally from scratch, which may be useful if you do indeed design/build your own HW. (There are others iirc). Initially you'd prob be better off trying out various Linuxes in VMs, see eg https://distrowatch.com/, just to get familiar. Typically one takes an existing distro & modifies it - saves a lot work vs eg lfs etc. Hope this gets you started |

Linux is not complicated. It's different, but, once you understand it, it's quite straightforward. |
