What distribution are you using? Do you know the name of the package manager on your distribution?

Look it up in the literature that came with your computer. Or you could use Google to look up your make and model of computer on the internet.

Oh, that's tough one... You don't know what distribution you're using? Guys, is it possible to easily determine what distribution one is running?

Code:

cat /etc/slackware-version
works in Slackware. 'uname' is useless. Hmm, guess we lack a simple way to answer that question. Please prove me wrong.

:)

Hei! :) Guess we are "landsmenn".

According to Wikipedia you are using Linux Xandros.

("landsmenn" means countrymen, fellow citizens in Norwegian)

I suggest we stick to English. I'm not sure, but the rules may prohibit all languages except English. Anyway, speaking English is kind of polite.

Besides, I have very little knowledge of Xandros. I'm a Slackware guy. So I don't thinks I can help, even if I write Norwegian. Of course, if some clever Xandros expert writes in English and you don't understand I can help translate. :)

Chech out this URL: http://www.xandros.com/products/gettingstarted.html

To install other applications

For some editions, you install an office suite (StarOffice® or OpenOffice.org) and other applications, such as Adobe® Reader and the GIMP graphics program, using the Applications CD. After login, simply insert the CD and follow the prompts.
Don't know if this is any help though...

But look at the screen shots and compare it to what you see on your screen. In that way you can verify of you're really using Xandros.

In Norwegian:
Se på skjermbilene fra linken over og finn ut om det virkerlig er Xandros du bruker. Da er du ett skritt videre i hvert fall.

Not many people use Xandros
..
i dont know if there is any GUI for software installation in xandros..........(like YAST in SUSE, Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu etc..)

but i guess u can install WINE from source
download it from here
http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ckage_id=77449

ritam_bkp 10-16-2008 03:22 PM

according to distrowatch
Xandros uses debian package management.....
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=xandros

so i gusee may be the debian binary of wine work for u..
download it here and just install without any problems.

That is correct, the rules clearly state all posts should be in English.

That could mean many things, I don't know what you mean.

Kind of sad they make it so hard when there are so many Linux systems that appear to be a lot easier to use.

This may help:

http://forums.xandros.com/viewtopic.php?t=14389

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=11555

They are xandros and asus eee help forums, so maybe they will be more knowledgeable.

Here is the eee wiki they refer to in link #2

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:wine

This link mentions two further links at the bottom for enhancing the performance when running wine, specifically in regards to counterstrike:

http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=40971

Some people say following the wiki instructions works just fine.

Supposedly, counterstrike is supposed to work well using crossover, which is already in xandros:

Here is a screenshot of someone playing counterstrike using crossover:
