Hi, welcome to LQ!

Which distribution of Linux are you using?

Cheers,

If your system boots using grub or lilo, then it is very unlikely that you can completely secure your data. Anyone booting into single-user mode will have unrestricted access to all files in the entire system. You may be able to encrypt your sensitive data using either an encrypting filesystem, or userspace tools. This will not prevent anyone from deleting data.

Let's put this in context: We are volunteers and we answer questions pretty much when we get around to it. Patience is the key....

My answer:
Do not keep valuable or sensitive data on a laptop. In addition to what has already been discussed, a laptop is vulnerable to be stolen.

Put the valuable data on an external USB drive and lock it up somewhere. There are now some very compact external drives available.
