ISO is exactly what you want. ISO files are actually images of complete CD compiles as one whole image (just like Ghost does for hard disks and partitions). However, in lieu of downloading, a lot (if not most) distros offer CDs you can order for a nominal fee. That might be the way to go if you have reservations about downloading. If you haven't already decided on a distro check out Simply Mepis at mepis.org. Good luck!

magazine

Another option if you don't want to order something (i.e. you don't have a credit card/ don't want to wait for shipping) would be to goto your closest big box book store (borders, barns and noble) and look in the computer magazine section. Almost all of the linux magazine come with a free cd or dvd with a distro on it. Sometimes it's a good live distro.

Some of the magazine I've read are:

Linux format
Linux User and Developer

You can probably pick up a magazine w/ cd for $6 - $10

You can get a set of Ubuntu CDs sent to you for free from the Ubuntu shipit scheme. It does take a few weeks for delivery, but it's free!

The CDs you get are the Live CD / Installer. You can use it as a live CD, and/or install if you like.
