I don't have a root password, please advise...

Hi,

I have two n00b problems, first problem is that I don't actually have a root password and the second problem is - even if I did have a root password it won't allow me to type anything beside the word "password:".

I have VMware Player with CentOS 6.3 in-build browser appliance 10.0.9.

Any advice is appreciated

I don't know about CentOS but I would imagine it is similar.
When you type in your password you can not see it nor view that anything has been typed. After typing it just hit your Enter key.

The root password is the password you were prompted during install I would think.

To change the password for root enter:
passwd root

To reset password have a look see here:
http://ithelpblog.com/os/linux/redha...d-on-centos-6/
and

Hope that helps

As the time of installation, it asks your to set root password, so hope you should have set it, if you had installed the OS.

On the other hand, direct root login is not allowed in CentOS. And when you login as root and type it's password, system suppresses whatever you type, so you need to just enter root password and hit ENTER and it will work. This is because of security reason, so no one can see length of your password.

Have you got a regular user account? If so, you could try and run sudo su - to elevate your permissions to root. You won't need the root password then, but you can reset the root password once you are in with sudo too. Or you could try su - root and use the root password.
