I cant download softwares from CD. The drive didn't respond.

I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 and installed it in my desktop computer.
I updated the softwares through update manager. I know nothing
about this operating system. I can browse and use Internet, but most
other functions didn't work properly. I think I boot it in wrong way
or have to download more softwares. I tried the tutorial, but can't
understand much. I am very interested in this OS, and I want it to be
fully functional. Please inform me the installation procedure step by

With a brand-new install, you need to open the Ubuntu Software Center, and in the search box, type "ubuntu restricted extras". Installing that will provide access to CDs, (unprotected) DVDs, flash and java content, etc.

Thank you for your reply. I tried both, but still the problem exist. Actually the problem
is - I tried to download Oxford Leaner's Dictionary 8th edition (the CD is supported by Ubuntu)
but I cant see anything, even an icon on the desk top. In the disk utility option I can see
the entire space taken as free. I can play audio CD, copy CD, burn image to CD and everything
else (I think so). If I inserted an autorun CD, it doesn't taken automatically and when I
click the icon and then the autorun prompt, I got a message showing "cannot find autorun program".
If I opened the files and click any exe file, archive manager window opens and got a message showing

"Archive: /media/VA2038w_wm-LED/drvinst.exe
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/VA2038w_wm-LED/drvinst.exe or
/media/VA2038w_wm-LED/, and cannot find /media/VA2038w_wm-LED/drvinst.exe.ZIP, period."

(this is from my monitor user guide and installation CD).

Anyway after the 10-15 days of installation I am happy with this OS and studied something about it
and it increases my curiosity. The different tutorials in the youtube help much, especially "Linux
tutorial series part 1 to 6, other tutorials are also helpful because we got an online demonstration.
Thank you for that guys too.

Your .exe files are binaries files for windows.
You can't launch them directly. You have to use program like wine to emulate windows libraries.

By the way, do you really had to do this way ? On your CD, don't you have any .pdf files ? Those files must contain the dictionnary.
