I can not hear system sound
 

I have a weird problem about sound. I am using Redhat 9 with kernel 2.4

it can use "CD Player" to play the mp3 in the CD, even the sound is not that good, but it really works. But I can hear the System sound, for example, when I start up system, I can not hear anything. And I use "sound dection " to test the sound, I can Not hear the sample sound.

It is weird, isn't it?

The "system sound", as you say, has nothing to do with music, be it mp3 or audio cd. The system produces sound through that small speaker inside the box. You will not detect it using the sound detection feature.
Take a walk over the bios and see if it isn't disabled.

Well.. I am not totally sure how is suppossed to work in redhat. but in my debian at installation time i was given the option to configure the system sound to the internal CPU (case) speaker or through my sound card.

I chosed through my sound card (my case has no speaker)

Also you might want to take a look in the volume levels in the sound mixer. Perhaps you got a 'mute' at some channel.

Also the 'theme' setting affect the used system sounds. you might not have a specified sound for the system warnings.

Check on:
Control Center > Sound and Multimedia > System notifications

nothing to do with Bios...
 

nothing to do with Bios, because I have a XP in the another partition , I can hearsystem sound. The thing is OSS, I install OSS, then I can not hear system sound and CD, so I remove it, do something I can not remember, so the weird thing happen, I have CD sound, but no system sound event.

I guess it is OSS that change somewhere and not uninstall cleanly.

Either you have OSS installed or you need to install ALSA, in order to have sound in your linux.

And you would also need aRts.


OSS = Open System Sound
ALSA = Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
aRts = analog realtime synthesizer

The idea of the whole thing is to create/process sound using small modules which do certain tasks.
