Hello, I just installed Fedora 9 and I cant login. I keep getting the "localhost Login" prompt. I type in root, then it prompts me for a password??? Help.....

When you did the install, it would have asked you (twice!) to create the root password.
If you can't remember what you put (and given this is a brand new install), just do a re-install and either memorize the passwd or write it down (in which case change it after login with the passwd cmd).

During installation a password was required. I'm not sure if FC9 allows for empty passwords - if so, then just hit enter when the password is asked for.

If you have passed a password during installation and can't remember it, then start from a Live CD/DVD (like Knoppix or something similar), mount the root harddisk in writeable mode and edit /etc/passwd (remove the root password or add another one in the corrected hashed format).

You can also re-install the system using the update option - this will take less time, since all the files are there already. This time remember the root password.

If you have forgot your password, there is no need to reinstall the system. You can still recover the password by 2 ways.
- Login to single user mode and change it.
To login into single user mode. Boot into fedora 9, when blue scree appears, press E, Select your kernel and press enter. Add S or Single or 1 at the end of that line and press esc and then finally press B to boot. This will boot your computer in single user mode. You will get one prompt. There type and change the password. Reboot.

- Rescue mode.

I have the following problem:
I can login to a normal user. When I su - it asks me for the root password and accepts it there. however if I try to login as root from the GUI login form at the server setup it says authentication fails.

Since I can su - it means the password is correct. Then why would it fail the authentication at the server startup?
