If I were you I'd start buy going into the shorewall setup and see what exactly you are stopping from getting in your network. Perhaps you have blocked DHCP and you can't get an IP address. It could be a number of things. You'll just have to use some trial and error.

Uninstall shorewall and use the Mandrake Firewall, I think it's smoothwall.

Start mcc (Mandrake Control Center) Select Security -> DrakFirewall. It may install some packages if they are not already installed. Then just select any services you would like to run on your box. The rest of them will be blocked but you will have internet access.

Later when you connect the Win98 machine you can go back to mcc and select Network & Internet -> DrakGW and this will let you setup your computer to be a gateway to share the internet access with the windows computer.

i have been told that shorewall is better than the linux firewall. I have determined that it is not working because bothe firewalls are running at the same time but i do not know how to switchn the linux one off if someone could help me or give me a source for documentation on shorwall

Hi,
an excellent documentation should be on your box already.
Dont know exactly, but you should search in directories like /usr/share/doc
or use brute force doing in /usr the following

find -name *shorewall* -print

if its not there, try installing it from the CDs
(rpm-package named shorewall-doc or similar)

finally:
3x"w".shorewall.net
(sorry, i may not post links till now)

Hope this helps.

The firewall that is best for you is the one you can make work the way you want it to. I was only suggesting the Mandrake firewall because it is integrated into the Mandrake Control Center and it is so easy to setup. To make it work you have to click a few times. To turn it off just select the box at the top of the page which says Everything (no firewall).

<edit> Personally I dont use either of those. I use the one HERE.
