I Can't Shutdown Xubuntu

I am a very new user to Xubuntu & I have a stupid problem. I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 in a special release that PC-User magazine Australia put together. I'm liking what I see so far but I just recently updated everything & now the desktop is running the Xfce 4 Desktop Environment.

When I pick the running man icon to shutdown the machine all that happens is the Xfce 4 panel seems to disappear but the machine doesn't shutdown. Then I am left with a basic desktop with no icons to shutdown the machine.

To shutdown the machine I turn it off manually. It reboots ok back to the Xfce 4 desktop no problems.

Is there something stupid that I am missing or is there a problem?

Thanks for your help

Type this command in terminal;
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modules
add the following line, then save:
Code:
apm power_off=1
Then;
Code:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Find the line that start with "kernel"and add this on the end;
Code:
acpi=off apm=power_off
Save and reboot.
If that doesn't help post the output of;
Code:
uname -a
Code:
lspci -v
and of dmesg.log or dmseg file which is located in /var/log.
