Unhappy I can't make USB work at all!

I have read all these how-to's and I'm sick of them. My kernel says it is running USB drivers, but the /proc/bus/usb/devices file is empty. I am using Red Hat 7.1. All I want is to make my HP Scanjet 4200C to work with SANE. When I start SANE it say's

" xsane: no devices available! "

The main HOW-TO I used was this one: http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/book1.html
(this how-to is telling me nothing I can understand)
The Kernel has the following USB configuration:

USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. UHCI USB (rev. 2)

IRQ 11

Master Capable. Letency=64.

I/O at 0xe400 [0xe41f]

I'm so confused I don't know what to do! Can someone help me??

Do "lsmod" as root and check that the modules are loaded.

USB MicroSoft IntelliMouse Optical Drivers?

I also have trouble with USB support under the 2.4.5 kernel, and was wondering where I can get updated drivers for my USB MicroSoft Intelli Optical Mouse?

I run SlackWare 8.0.

Thanks

You don't get drivers for your mouse, you configure it correctly in your X config file. Go to XFree86.org and read the instructions or do a search of this site.

might not be the usb's fault, the 4200 backend is still in the alpha stage. http://hp4200-backend.sourceforge.net/

Is there an automatic mode that you can run Xf86config in?

I read something on xfree.org about putting;

option "protocol" "auto"

into the config, what do I use as the device location in that case?

I found out what my problem was! I was using a 2.0 controller card on kernel 2.4.??. I went out and bought a 1.1 controller today, and it worked (almost perfectly) It even automatically configured my Microsoft Intellimouse USB for me. (still can't get mozilla to use the wheel though). All I really wnt to do now is make my scanner work. I used usbview to see if the scanner was confiqured and it said there was a generic USB scanner attached. However, when I start xsane, It says there is no scanner. How do I make the scanner work?

the problem with the scanner might be that it's looking for a serial port that the scanner would be attached to. can you change it to search in the usb port?

When I type xsane at the console the next thing I see is a box that says "xane: no devices available". When I type sane-config I see the following:
Usage:
sane-config --version - show installed script and SANE version
sane-config --ldflags - linker flags required to link with SANE
sane-config --libs - libraries required to link ith SANE
sane-config --cflags - compiler flags required to find SANE headers
sane-config --help - show usage info (this message)
sane-config --help SUBCOMMAND - show help for SUBCOMMAND
sane-config --prefix - prefix used during SANE compile
sane-config --exec-prefix - exec-prefix used during SANE compile

Now what do I do?
