Hi and welcome to LQ, I hope your stay is long and worthwhile.

Red Hat 9 is from 2003 and as such is extremely out of date and therefor not a good option to try and use. I would recommend that you either puchase a new RedHat or download the free Fedora or any other of the fine Linux systems such as Debian etc that are free to download and/or use.

If you want a free version of RedHat, try Centos https://www.centos.org/.
As noted above, RH9 is too old to run on modern HW.
See the Wikipedia pages for more background.

???--your first post here is just today....

joseven RH9 is so old that you can think of it as Windows98

so

would you even be able to install Windows98 on a NEW 64 bit laptop ????

NO, is the answer.

please use a currently supported operating system
if YOU 100% MUST use red hat on a laptop BUY a license for RHEL6
but RHEL was NEVER designed for use on a Laptop

install something DESIGNED for "home" type use
in the rpm red hat family there is
fedora17 -- NOT recommended for NEW linux users

CentOS 6.3- good for the office but NOT for home use

OpenSUSE 12.1 rpm based and good for the Home use

Let's not confuse the OP with something that is factually incorrect.

Not going to go into details but lets just say I did this only a few weeks ago simply because I needed WIN 98 and MS-DOS for a specific program for my car.
