I bombed my beautiful new Debian :(

Help

I had a great Debian install, lean and mean. I compiled a new kernel, and it was just screaming like a cheeta.

And then...

I added append="hda=ide-scsi" to lilo so maybe it could see my DVD+/-RW (2nd CD drive), and now she won't reboot

How about it guys? I've tried linux rescue, but the old kernel's gone.

I thought there was a way you could use SHIFT + something at lilo to just edit lilo.conf? Am I thinking of grub?

Tried using Tom's root/boot disk, RH9 CD, and Gentoo CD.

All filesystems are reiserfs.

On hindsight, probably you didn't run /sbin/lilo after making your changes.

You should be able to rescue your system using Tom's (or any other) rescue CD.

Just mount your boot partition, edit your lilo.conf, and be sure to run lilo after that.

Azmeen,

I had it rebooted 3 times, ran lilo. The problem is Tom's doesn't support ReiserFS. And I rm the old kernel, so can't boot to it to get to lilo.conf either.

Only thing I could load that does have support for ReiserFS is the latest Gentoo Live CD, but then there's no bash commands or editors to use. That Gentoo CD gets me to #

I sympathise with your plight but can only offer you to check out SystemRescueCD at http://systemrescuecd.sourceforge.net/

It does support ReiserFS and hopefully you'll be able to get your system up again.

Good luck!

I booted with my Debian floppy boot disk and got it back

Seems I just didn't wait long enough for it to load. Removed the line from lilo, ran lilo, rebooted and it's back. Now I just need to configure my nic again

Thanks for the posts, especially momentum - don't know what I would have done without you, guy!
