Unhappy I am trying to use gtk for my ipod and it's not working.

OK, first an apology: I have tried to find the answer to how to use my ipod Nano 1G with ubuntu software for about a month, looking on line and trying, and have failed. All I want to do is be able to download podcasts and listen to music -- nothing fancy. It seemed like GTK was the right option but when I was installing it in the terminal and typed in the code I got a request for a "password" and then it wouldn't let me type anymore. I am not a technical person and I don't know the lingo but it did seem like I was on the right track until I hit that request for a password. Please, can someone direct me to a tutorial on how to do this or help me here? The simpler the instructions, the better. Many thanks!
