Unhappy I am sooooo lost!!!

I just started using Linux. I have a Gos powered by Ubuntu 7.10. My browser is Firefox 2.0.0.19. Here is my problem......somehow while using Kleansweep (file cleaner)my Sun java got screwed up. I really only need it for pogo games (yeah i know), but I am lost when it comes to working with root and sun website is really confusing. When I type aboutlugins in my browser (some page told me to) it says Java(TM) Plug-in 1.5.0_13-b05 and all 31boxes are checked Enabled - yes. When I log into pogo, the games wont load anymore(they used to)but it gives a tester that says java is working correctly. I am stuck and dont know what to do. Remember I am a newbie, so try to not get too technical, OK? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me, I feel like an idiot.

Well, if your Java is enabled at 'Options=>Content' and the tester says Java is working correctly, maybe you should try to reinstall the Java content or even firefox at Synaptic Package Manager (System=>Administration). There are also other browsers available for Ubuntu, but Firefox is usually more compatible with this kind of plugins.

Seriously this isn't a windows machine. Running "file cleaners" is unneeded. Kleansweep is not intelligent. It just looks for certain files to delete and leaves it up to the user to decide whether to delete them or not. Obviously it removed part of the java plug in stuff. The fix should be as simple as removing and reinstalling the java plug in.

Give me the output of

dpkg --get-selections |grep java

Which version of gos do you have so that I can install it here to better help you? http://www.thinkgos.com/software.php

I would start by going into the browser and emptying the cache, cookies, etc (Clear private data).. and try again, since all indications are the plugin is working.

A dirty workaround might be to try installing epiphany. It's another web browser, and at least in my experience it does better with certain java elements than firefox. Clarification: it worked with youtube when iceweasel (a version of firefox) didn't. If you've got sudo rights, 'sudo apt-get install epiphany'.

Hmm you have 2 versions of java installed? I tried out a live cd of gos-3.01 and it didn't have any java installed. Did you install the java stuff your self? For starters you could give me the output of aptitude -P remove sun-java5-plugin sun-java6-plugin
You will probably have to be root or sudo It will prompt you if you want to remove the packages, just choose n I want to see if there will be any conflicts before we do remove them.

^c is the code used to terminate a running process, it is only copy in a GUI window

try ctrl+insert to copy, shit+insert to paste

and as you are running ubuntu,
open up your pakage manager (synaptic)
search for sun
and check sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-plugin are installed,

this should sort you out

Thumbs up

I am not sure what was wrong with my java but pressing "control c" fixed all of my computer issues. I couldnt get into package manager before I would get an error, and when I would run "dpkg --configure -a" like it told me to nothing worked. Now I can get into everything and not only is java working, but my java control panel comes up now when it never did before. I thank everyone who tried to help.
