HI and welcome to LQ.
If you have internet connected to your machine you can install vlc through yum.

Before that you have to install external repositories. Here is a good one:

Just run these from your terminal

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 / i386:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 / x86_64:

In every distribution I've ever used, VLC was in the default repositories, and compiling from source was unnecessary. Just open your "Software Center" or "Package Manager", whatever it's called in CentOS, and look for VLC, it's probably there and all you have to do is select it for installation.

seeing as centos 5.5 is no longer supported have you ran the "yum upgrade" to bring it up to cent5.6
as a normal user and NOT root run
Code:
su -
yum update
reboot after the 400+ packages are updated
then
Code:
yum search vlc
--- if there ---
su -
yum install vlc
for the extra repos see the centos wiki
a link IS ON the Centos.org web page
http://wiki.centos.org/
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
