I am new help me decide Mandriva 2006, Suse 10 or Ubuntu?
I was wondering what distribution is more use friendly for a new user to linux. Right now I have a laptop with Windows XP and Suse 10, but I wondering if other Linux distros are more user friendly. I want to decide between Mandriva 2006, Ubuntu 5.10, Suse 10
This are the specs of my laptop: -AMD Turion 64 ML-37 (2.0gb) -100gb HD -WI-FI -1gb RAM Please help me chose. |
Try them all and then choose the one that suites you best.

You have a good choice there. I would also think of MEPIS as well, its live CD is worth a try. Also look carefully at the documentation and see if you hardware is problematic. Display graphics are one this=ngs that drive me up the wall. All are excellent choices for the noob. All the best!

If you are up and running on SUSE 10, you might try listing things that you wish you had. Then see what distros offer those features.
The other approach is to install them all!!! If you think I'm joking, look at this: http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showt...hreadid=143973 |
try them all.
some distros are really different. I tested one that used "dir" instead of "l" which really messed with my head. windows flashbacks. I do have mandriva on my compaq and the hardware was detected at install. even the onboard wireless which impressed me. sound and the whole 9 was found. easy to navigate with graphic menues or CLI. |

When I see 64 bit. I think SUSE 10.0 x86-64. It installed on both of my 64 bit pc's with zero problems. I am not a big fan of YAST but I will put up with it.
I had problems with Ubuntu and debian 64 etch, Fedora core 4 also installed flawlessly, and I really do like that anaconda installer.(can't remember why I got rid of FC4??) I have tried all the 64 bit distros I can get my hands on. I look at distrowatch daily looking for something new to try. (distro whore I know.) Try as many as you can. One will click eventually.(hopefully.) You have a good list to start with. my .02 Blair |
ubuntu
I would reccomend ubuntu just becuase it is the first distro I have ever used that got my sound, wireless, and graphics card working without me changing a single file.
