get a live cd, try it and if you like it then install it.

Well, you can start using it, it's the best way to learn.
You can install linux in a virtual machine in windows, or dual boot, windows and linux, or run it from a live CD

Live CDs are definitely very good way to start learning Linux. And harmless to your computer since they do not require installation.
I would recommend to start with Puppy as it is very user-friendly, though not most "eye-candy".

Also look at free virtual machines after you peek at the top 30 or so at distrowatch.com

I like live cd's. They tend to be easy and safe ways but also on newer systems a virtual machine is way faster and still easy and safe.

Last thing I'd try is a dual boot. Save that for when you really know you can repair your system.

The LiveCD List is a good list to choose from. You can test drive a Gnu/Linux to see which fits for you. Be sure to check the downloads for validity. And be sure to burn the ISO image to the disc.
