I'm just a stupid noob
Hi guys,
I just downloaded ubuntu linux 5.10. I'm trying to get away from window$. I installed it but when I restarted, it came up with something similar to a command prompt. it told me to enter in my user name, I did, but then it just came up with something like a command prompt. I'm not like a big computer programmer but I do have a little computer knowledge. What do I enter in to get to the login screen? Thanks for the help!:newbie: |
i bet u just need to enter into the command prompt the command to bring up the gui version of it, u must have told it to load up the command prompt version, i dunno the command, u may beable to google around.

You actually just logged in. :) Now if you want to see a graphical system, type startx. From inside there, you should be able to find settings in a control panel to always boot to a graphical login. If not, come back here and we'll see if we can figure out what went wrong. I haven't installed Ubuntu, but I thought by default it was supposed to boot graphical (if not, they hosed up since they're supposed to be :newbie: friendly).

Thanks A Lot!!!

Were you able to find the control center setting that will allow a graphical login? I think the login screen for ubuntu is called gdm.

No, but I got it up and running fine. It looks great so far! Thanks for the help!

At the commandline, try typing sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get install gdm.
If that fails because gdm is already installed, try sudo apt-get --reinstall gdm. This will install (or reinstall) the graphical login manager and should start the next time you reboot. Have fun and checkout the http://ubuntuguide.org/. But be aware that some of the things there you have to modify a bit to get it to work on version 5.10. Have fun! :) |
