i'm a noob, how to use XINE?

Hi, my name is Hendri. i'm a noob otherwise i wouldn't ask such a stupid question :p

i'm running SuSE 10.0 on compaq v2000. i could play music on my box using Alsa, but it is obvious i can't play any kind of media clip ( DVD, CD, or even media files). the extension to the media i've tried is .wmv .

Anyone could help me?i keep studying about xine, and i get xine lib, but i can't solve how to use it. i read the faq of Xine, it is said that i could use windows codec in my SuSe, but the problem is i don't know how. I'm running dual boot with Xp-Prof.

Thanks for helping noobie :)

.wmv is a microsoft proprietary format. Xine will play just about any media if you install the correct codecs, but .wmv is a windows format. The others, cd, mp3, dvd, can all be played if you install the correct codecs and decryption files (libdvdcss).

Go to the www.zine.com site and read and download and install the W32codecs to help zine to read Windows .wma, etc. files. You will need to install the libdvdcss file too I beleive.

Suse ships with a broken version of xine due to licensing issues. You can use this guide to setup xine with full capabilities for Suse 10. The instructions are for 10.1 but they will work fine on 10.0 if you make sure you download 10.0 packages.
