To protext my websites downloads, im using a .htaccess script to prevent hotlinking of my big media files using something like

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^URL/.*$ [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^URL$ [NC]
RewriteRule .*\.(zip)$ MYURL [R,NC]
(the above is just an example.) The problem is, some people can told they are hotlinking when they are not, for some reason when some people have a firewall etc, the .htaccess file wont work and therefore they cannot download files. Can someone help with this?

Note: where i have put

URL and MYURL that really mean full website addresses, i just cannot post urls because i dont have 5 posts.

Because you are looking for a referer there and some people hide it you are likely to get problems. It may be a client that doesn't provide a referer or it could even be blocked by a proxy along the way.
