hsfconfig what is it and where is it?

Having a nightmare getting my modem recogised. I'm about to give up on Linux at my first attempt. (see thread 'dazed and confused')

Winmodems are one of the few common problems - that's why they're called "winmodems", because they're designed to work with windows.

If you know exactly which model of modem you have then look it up here that should give you and idea if it can be configured/installed/supported and it's status.

If you think that you may have already installed the winmodem driver, and you just need to see what happens, then have you tried to type into a terminal/konsole?

try it if you haven't already, and if you get command not recognised as "user" then type su and when prompted type in your root password and try typing the hsfconfig in and see what you get.


As for giving up on your first attempt, well why do you think that the system builders use/include winmodems? Cos they're cheap. Plus they want you to use windows, and don't want things to be easy if you don't want to use windows!

Either that or see if you can get your hands on an external modem, but make sure at the winmodems site that it's not just an external version of the same thing - I understand that most external devices are "proper" modems and it's supposed to be a "no problem" thing to get them working.

personally, as I have a broadband ADSL connection, I use a modem/router device, that plugs to an 8 port hub and the hub to a PCI ethernet card in my PC - works faultlessly and means that If I want to change distro, I just have to apply the LAN IP address.
