Hi
I have an HP officejet 4500 that is finally printing, but not scanning. I have attempted through Document Scanner, Simple Scan, HP uiscan and Xsane.
I am not exactly literate when it comes to computers, but have attempted every suggestion in similar posts that I can find.
PLEEEASE help me.
To get all functionality of this printer working under Linux, especially also the non-printing features, like scanning, printer status, maintenance, and photo download from memory cards, use the HPLIP driver package from HP.
The HPLIP printer database lists your printer as fully supported incl. the scan function starting with HPLIP 3.10.2 (or 3.10.6, for some devices in the series).
It's possible you might find a solution in this thread, especially when it comes to symbolic links and how to check for possible errors with hp-setup and hp-check commands:
No, too old for that.
It has been VERY reliable. It is the Linux updates that screwed everything up.
Ah.Please try to describe your issues are clear as possible.
Mint version before/now?
Connection WiFi or USB?
If usb, what is the USB ID?
Current hplip version of your system?
Scanning is the only issue (printing seems ok)?
Printer/scanner connected directly to the PC or connected to a server?
etc.
So. It worked. There are finding methods of type IS/IS-Not or Fish-diagramm. So, we have to think like this.
Mint version before - not sure
now - 18.1
Connection USB
If usb, what is the USB ID? No idea - nor how to find out
Current hplip version of your system? Downloaded yesterday as 'latest version'
Scanning is the only issue. printing is fine now.
Printer/scanner connected directly to the PC
There was no need to download the latest HPLIP version then. Linux Mint 18 provides HPLIP 3.16 in their software repository. More than enough for your printer. Just install it from Software Manager.

Look it up in the output of lsusb on the command line.
