HP Officejet 5510 on Debian
 

I have read the related documentation and searched google and have found no solution to my particular problem concerning this printer.

I am running Debian Sarge
kernel 2.4.27-2-686
I use the KDE 3.3.2 GUI

I have atempted to install my printer via the instructions given on the sourceforge.net site and I have had no success. Let me elaborate.

I can successfully complete Step 1
In Step 2 everything is fine untill item 11 as there is no file by the name of cups in the path indicated however there is cupsys which I have assumed is what was ment by whoever wrote the instructions
Step 3 is fine untill I have to print a test page

1. The first problem is step three is that there is no added link to the HP Device Manager as suggested however it can be accessed through the command line

2. The second a most disfficult problem is that when I try to print a test page nothing happens with the printer itself. If I go to the print jobs tab I am told that there is a job printing but to does not do anything from this point and the printer status is described as being idle.

How can I fix this problem in Debian Sarge.

here are the steps i took to get my HP up and running in debian:

apt-get install hpoj

apt-get install hpijs ijsgimpprint foomatic-db-hpijs

To start it, `/etc/init.d/hpoj start`. After that, plug it in. The
device URI will be something like "ptal:/mlc:usb:[printer_name]

If you're not running CUPS, I suggest you do. It's not intuitive, but
it's the way of the future for UNIX printing and supports IPP natively.
The manual looks good, but I haven't spent nearly enough time reading

I knew to look for the "ptal thingie", was fairly intuituve. Even
better
is that there's CUPS-aware versions of the standard "lpr" suite
available too.

got that from a friend in my LUG who has helped me a lot. for the most part there might be a little tweeking to get it past those steps but try that first and good luck.

I have tried what you suggested and I am unable to continue to the "plug-in" portion of your suggestion because hpoj was unable to detect my printer through its USB port. Further when I tried to run /etc/init.d/hpoj setup I received an error stating that that command was not found even though that was the syntax for the command given when I first installed the hpoj package. Where do I go from here.

Also could you please clarify what you mean by "plug it in" plug it in to what, where and how.

by plug it in it is refering to plug the USB cable into either the computer or printer. up until that point you should not have both ends of the USB cable connected.

are you able to use other USB devices?

after all of that i had to go through KDE print manager as root to get it finished and connected. dont know if it matters or not as my printer is NOT connected directly to my PC but is shared via a win2k server.
