HP Mini wont install ubuntu.

I have a HP mini 210-1000 that I want to install dual boot Ubuntu with Windows. I have the installer for Ubuntu and have set the system to recognize a USB to select the .iso file. Although I see that the settings are the correct ones, the HP wont accept the .iso file and boot with the installer. Is there anyway to make the mini recognize the file and install the OS? Can I do it through windows somehow?

I recommend you download unetbootin while in windows. Select the distribution , select the .iso file and let it do it's job . (You need 7zip program for it to work )

Try to boot again and boot from the USB flash drive . This time it should work :)

Hi Gutsy, it's not enough to simply have the Ubuntu *.iso on the USB drive. It must also must have a bootsector area. This is done with special utilities. One of the easiests way to create a bootable USB drive for Ubuntu is to use unetbootin

You can also go the Wubi route, installing Ubuntu Linux via Windows like you would a normal program. The end user experience is the same, and it is easier to do. The only problem with using Wubi is if you encounter some sort of off-the-wall problem it may be hard to diagnose and fix.

Still, it can be a great introduction to Linux.

@leapord Thanks for this option, I can use this again for another system and test it out on the mini as well. Unfortunately the mini only has 1GB of ram, so it runs a virutal box solution rather slowly. What is the performance of Wubi like on a slow machine?

Wubi is like a program that makes a virtual file system file in windows's partition and let's ubuntu use that partition as it wants .

Wubi is not a virtual machine , it is a dualboot maker that frees you the hassle of having to partition ;)

In short, it is faster (less resource-intensive) than virtualization is.

Take a look here to learn more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wubi_%2...u_installer%29

A good summary from a user in another forum:
Quote:

The main difference is performance. Wubi does NOT run Ubuntu in a VM, but simply encapsulates the root filesystem for Ubuntu within the Windows NTFS filesystem, and then plays tricks with the startup sequence to boot Ubuntu using that encapsulated filesystem.

There's some overhead from this (having the ext3/4 filesystem encapsulated within the NTFS filesystem), but this is only on disk access, and should be substantially less than the overhead from a full host OS with a virtualization setup.

I downloaded the WUBI installer and ran it of course it didn't run. I re-ran the download and of course the results were the same, it just didn't begin, I checked task manager and none of the processes were related to the WUBI installer. If it works then i will install it on both systems, but no luck with WUBI today.

ok.here's another option ..

follow THIS link to mount the iso of ubuntu you said you have .

open the mounted cd drive as you would normally do with a cd . If any prompt to autorun , click yes or whatever windows tells you.

There should be a menu that tells you about Wubi.

Run it. Enjoy .
