HP LaserJet 1505P configs, is "ready", will not print

Fedora-16 Linux, new install, printer-config appears fine, printer does not print.
First printer-install was via auto-install utility
Second install was with printer OFF and by use of HP model look-up.

Both result in what appears to be a "printer ready" clean install.
But printer will not print.

I reinstalled Fedora-16 ...and the printer...using both methods named above. Same result.

I would try adding the printer directly from the cups server using "localhost:631" in your web browser. It's straight forward. I don't care for a lot of those auto config printer programs in some distros. If something goes wrong, there's no easy way to check settings.

jwsmith 02-15-2012 05:27 PM

hp laserjet 1505P -- no print

I used http://localhost:631 to install the printer.
Each time, prior to install, I deleted out the old config.

No good result
No print

Ion Silverbolt 02-15-2012 07:13 PM

I think you need to download a plug-in. More info on it here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web...jet_p1505.html

I think Fedora comes with hplip, so hp-setup should be available. If not, check the package manager and install hplip.

jwsmith 02-15-2012 08:32 PM

hplipopensource.com ........

I have already been there (hplipopensource.com).
Downloaded the plug-in.
Printer looks good...says it's ready... Will not print.

I'm running out of doors to go through, new hypotheses to explore.
I'm beginning to fear that this is a single printer-model "glitch" lieing unapproachably deep in proprietary code.

However if any of you has an additonal theory that I can "ring out"..??...
I will be delighted to read carefully, and do exactly that.

There is "background" to this printer: The HP laserjet 1505P has performed with Win-XP but Win-XP did not install it. HP Manual that came with the printer was VERY explicit that users absolutely must not allow Win-XP to e v e n t r y to config. the printer. Accordingly, the procedure was to disconnect the printer entirely and use a supplied "driver" disk to perform config. Then and only then....turn on the printer. My theory has always been that HP does not want to pay Microsoft a plug-and-play royalty. Therefore (at least in the case of the LaserJet 1505P) they supply proprietary drivers and the unusual config. method that I have just described. Furthermore, even under the Win XP-Professional OS, the printer has been "twitchy" in that if there's a print-job problem..??..the print software will "hang" and thereafter function can only be restored via a complete OS reboot.

Query to you-all: This condition exists under Fedora-16.
It would only cost me $6 or so, to try Ubantu.
Would you estimate, that Ubando would cause the printer to function?

Final Alternate line-of-attack: Just buy another printer.

FYI....I am just-now leaving Microsoft for Linux.
I'm not a "hater" personality......
In fact I've always admired Bill Gates and his company.

I just became aware, however, that Microsoft has written Windows-7 to NOT RECOGNIZE a Win-XP backup.
Windows-7 will recognize backup files of its immediately predecessor Windows-Vista.
This policy is Microsoft's way of forcing tight user-compliance to successive OS upgrades.
BACKUPS however are a computer-users life-line.
For Win-7 not to recognize an Win-XP *.bkf file is "commercial motive brought to the point of malice."
So.....I'm leaving Microsoft.

I was a DOS COMMANDLINE jockey.
I like GUI.....but I like Command Line control very much.
So here I am, jousting with FEDORA-16 and this obstinate printer of mine.

Please help if you can.
I am still pleased (and quite determined) to join your ranks

Judd Smith

PS...YES..!!!...I DID CHECK...!!!...the "Install CD" supplied with the printer to see if it included an Install/Setup specifically for Linux. No, it does not.

Ion Silverbolt 02-16-2012 12:52 AM

Have you tried printing as root? It may be some kind of permissions issue. Are you connecting through usb, or through ethernet? In the cups configuration, there is a setting where you can select which users are allowed to print.

tailinlinux 02-16-2012 01:42 AM

hi

run
Code:

hp-setup
when your on printer driver selection look for the
hp-laserjet_p1505-hpijs.pdd or hp-laserjet_p1505-hpijs.pdd.gz

then test print

maybe this one can help.

DavidMcCann 02-16-2012 11:17 AM

Have you tried printing after disabling SELinux? —
setenforce Permissive

jwsmith 02-16-2012 05:57 PM

DavidMcCann ....... I did as you suggested and obtaind no good result. printer will not print.
Interesting: I first used the GUI as follows: SustemTools>SystemSettings> (..but did not find any icon or path leading to SELinux administration)
So I thought: If I log in as "root" first....THEN.....SystemSettings will show me a wider variety of tools. FALSE.

Therefore I went to the commandline and entered: # /etc/selinux/config WHICH RETURNED..!! bash: /etc/selinux/config: Permission Denied
Wow....I didn't know permission could be denied to a "root" user....
Nor could I guess why it would be.

So then I entered: #cat /etc/selinux/config----which did return the information that SELinux was ENABLED.
Then I entered: #SELINUX=permissive

REBOOTED--Went out to the printer and as I said--the printer did not print.
Then I returned to the Terminal and restored.. #SELINUX=enforcing.

So can you tell me why the Eudora-16 GUI System Tools does not offer SELinux Admistration?
It's not critical to me---I'm comfortable with the CommandLine and have ref. books that assist me.
But I'm curious.

Second, can you tell me why # /etc/selinux/config .........returned PERMISSION DENIED.

sorry type in terminal what i mean but before typing that log on root privileged.

then enter your root password

TAILINLINUX......want to thank you, my printer prints.
Some notes, for your information:
# hp-setup returned: ERROR..install the hplip-gui package and ERROR: hplip requires GUI support (try running with --qt3) Also try using interactive ( -i ) mode.

So then I issued the command:
# yum install hplip-gui

Following installation my desktop had the HP-GUI manager.
I invoked it..and it provided a utility for installing the required plug-in.
The plug-in did the trick.

Want to thank you very much.
Want you to know of your success.
