hp lap top+fedora 20-8.1 not charging

1.Installed fedora 20 off DVD no problems runs fine.
2. Battery charged with 8.1 now does not.
3.Tried all the usual pull battery, pull power cord, and hold down the power button 30 seconds to discharge system nothing doing.
4.Have 19.7 volts from power supply to laptop. Linux power monitor says battery not charging.
5.Apparently some windows OSes have a battery control app.
6.I don't know if Linux does also but I can't find it if Linux has such an app.
7. I believe this problem is software related.
8. Hp F2 diagnostics does not list anyway to access battery.
9. So if anybody has seen or knows a way to repair this malfunction please help!

finally got to these using "su"
[root@localhost wherewolfzany]# ls /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0

alarm current_now power technology

capacity cycle_count present type

charge_full device serial_number uevent

charge_full_design manufacturer status voltage_min_design

charge_now model_name subsystem voltage_now

[root@localhost wherewolfzany]#

[root@localhost wherewolfzany]# cat charge_full

cat: charge_full: No such file or directory

[root@localhost wherewolfzany]# /sys/class/power_supply/charge_full

bash: /sys/class/power_supply/charge_full: No such file or directory

[root@localhost wherewolfzany]# cat /sys/class/power_supply/charge_full

cat: /sys/class/power_supply/charge_full: No such file or directory

[root@localhost wherewolfzany]# cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/ charge_full

cat: /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/: Is a directory

cat: charge_full: No such file or directory

[root@localhost wherewolfzany]#

ls /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power

async runtime_status wakeup_active_count

autosuspend_delay_ms runtime_suspended_time wakeup_count

control runtime_usage wakeup_expire_count

runtime_active_kids wakeup wakeup_last_time_ms

runtime_active_time wakeup_abort_count wakeup_max_time_ms

runtime_enabled wakeup_active wakeup_total_time_ms

Also tried ls -1 cat-a cat-A

Ok I finally get to all of those files and then I got to here
ls /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/power
async runtime_status wakeup_active_count
autosuspend_delay_ms runtime_suspended_time wakeup_count
control runtime_usage wakeup_expire_count
runtime_active_kids wakeup wakeup_last_time_ms
runtime_active_time wakeup_abort_count wakeup_max_time_ms
runtime_enabled wakeup_active wakeup_total_time_ms
For some reason i cannot open any files no matter what HUH
As you can see I've been thru the mill on this and just need a way to use/install charge software but cannot open/use the above

Is upower running ?. Have a read of this section - the --enumerate and --show-info should be interesting.

ops

Yes I have 19.7 volts at power plug to laptop. Also lap top works when plugged in
no problems there this is a straight-up software issue. If I wasn't clear all of the files listed are something I can see as root but cannot access or use or find any way to turn on the charging soft ware. o,e,m,N

Apologies if I missed something but have you verified it is not charging by letting it run out of power?

Try another distro. I've run a few different ones (Mint, Lubuntu, MX-14) on a HP Win 8 laptop with no issues at all. Now, I caveat in that I shut off all the UEFI stuff and run mine as a BIOS box...

My term. I put UEFI into legacy mode, shut off secure boot, redid the hard drive into MBR mode. I then installed Win 7 and a Linux distro in dual boot mode. I have no idea if another distro will help as there may be a hardware problem with your laptop - call HP and see what they tell you...

Download and boot a live version of a mainstream distro like Mint - see if it works. I find Mint is best equipped OOTB for mainstream hardware issues. It may just be a coincidence that the battery quit charging as hardware does fail..
