howto secure e-mails

I was searching here and at google, but couldn't find answer on my basic question:

I need to recieve and send securely emails.

Do I need mail server or just mail client?

I have cabel connection from Comcast>Linux based firewall>Laptop dualboot XP and Slax + desktop XP

So emails then should be readable on Slax and XP [my girflriend].

thanx for your time

There is no sure way to secure sending or receiveing anything over the net. With so many emails going back and forth though, I don't think many would bother snooping you mail anyway...

Your best bet would be to encrypt the message itself using a key. Then it really wont matter who intercepted it, as it would be all but useless.

there are a couple of 'simple' ways to send emails securely. one doesn't involve 'sending' at all.

just open up a webmail account, let's say at yahoo.com, and leave messages in your account's notepad, or draft, then give your girlfriend access to your account. this way, 'emails' are never actually sent.

if you insist an actually 'sending', then each of you can set up a pgp account at hushmail.com.

cheers,
