Howto do things in GNU/Linux

Most GNU/Linux distributions come with a ton of applications, development tools, and support for all sorts of fancy devices. But none of this is very obvious when you boot into KDE or GNOME for the first time. The menu contains a few apps but they are scattered about and don't have names that reveal what they do. The vast majority of tools on the system aren't even in the menus. This howto aims to help users to get acquainted with the tools available and have them up and running on their own. Instead of giving a list of programs you can run, this howto focus on tasks that you can do and how to get them done in GNU/Linux. People use computers to do things, not to run programs.
