There is
absolutely no advantage (and probably some disadvantages!) for an Ubuntu 16.10 user to install libmtp from that launchpad link.
Rather, I recommend that you use Ubuntu's built in "package manager" to install libmtp from the tested and trusted Ubuntu repositories. You can install it with a few mouse clicks (or a simple terminal command).
Many users will prefer the GUI package manager called Ubuntu Software Center. Or you could use the following terminal commands if you prefer:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libmtp9
Why do I say there is "no advantage" to installing from launchpad? If you check the link, the latest version offered (at the time of this writing) is 1.1.12-1. However, if you check the Ubuntu 16.10 repository, you'll see that the version offered through official channels is also 1.1.12-1, so there's no advantage or benefit to going outside the regular channels in this case:
