How would i go about disabling the touchpad of my laptop
 
gday, so i've a thinkpad which has the track point. I don't use the touch pad and sometimes i finder my cursor drifting slowly towards one direction of the screen, because my finger is resting on the pad. How can i disable the touchpad?

Hi,

Check if you're using the 'psmouse' module (lsmod), remove it with rmmod, see if that does the trick. If it does (in my case it works) your touchpad should be completely disabled. To have it stay like that between reboots, add it to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf.

First link Google provided after searching for "how to disable touchpad on thinkpad"

FN + F8 should do the trick.

Works similar on my laptop. For me it's FN + F6. If FN + F8 doesn't work. Then look for a touchpad icon on one of your laptops function keys. Then it's FN + that function key.

P.S.
Step 1 on that list refers to using Windows. It works on Linux as well :)

This key combination is only needed once. The touchpad stays disabled after a reboot.

Hi,

I remember trying something similar (key combinations depending on hardware/software settings) and didn't work for me. After a short while the touchpad 'automagically' got activated again. Hence the 'hard' way I mentioned.

Hi guys, thanks for the tips. I have now tried the key combo And it doesn't work, i've looked at the icons and f8 is the right button, but it does nothing.

Thankyou Eric for taking a personal interest. I'm sorry, i was at work and checked this on my phone and later tried some solutions when i got home and then got side tract. I looked at your link and a member mentioned an option that can be edited in the bios; i checked this and there is; this did the trick; thank you very much Eric for helping me on this.
