How to use Ubuntu's LightDM to change default desktop environment?

Changing the Default Session

The default session is set by configuration in /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/ that session packages provide. If you need to override this you can set:

[SeatDefaults]
user-session=name

Where name is the name of the session .desktop file from /usr/share/xsessions/*.desktop.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LightDM#Chan...efault_Session (this is the link where the above information came from)

I did exactly what the above says (I replaced name with i3.desktop) but it still doesn't work, can anyone help? I use Xubuntu on a liveCD

If you reboot a live CD, it just reverts back to what it was before you made any changes. If you log out and then log back in it should work.

I hope this helps.

A better question: How to I change the default desktop session through the command line?

If you are using the live cd it will not have i3 installed so it will not work.

I have it installed via USB and it works fine, I just had to edit the ~/.dmrc file so that it would become my default.. (can also do this through the GUI login, but for scripting I had to edit .dmrc)
