Could you explain what exactly goes wrong when you try and create tar.gz files?
I often create tar files and never had any problem. I'm French, and also rely on ISO-8859-1 (well, ISO-8859-15 in fact: roughly the same with the EURO sign added).

Yves.

this is what is happening.. The upper one is an untared folder.

so you say that there is no need to configure tar / gzip?
what else could it be then?

edit: Sorry for hurting your eyes with windows =)

edit2: fixed. this was a problem with the windows "unpack program". when i run "tar -xf" the files are named right.
