How to use my Nokia 6020 mobile as a modem
Hi
I am using Fedora Core 4 and want to use my Nokia 6020 mobile phone for web surfing . I am already using it as modem in WindowsXP. I also downloaded gnokii and GPRS Easy Connect but they not worked . I am using either DKU-5 cable or MA620 USB infrared adapter in windows . In linux also my device (cable and IrDA ) are detected but i could not connect my mobile in Linux . So Please help me connecting my pnone as a modem. |
Well, only because we love you ...
My friend, I'm sorry to say, but you cannot, mark my words, cannot, use your mobile as a modem on linux. See, it's all about drivers. Nokia shipped drivers with the phone which you installed on Windows. It is these drivers which allow your phone to talk to Windows. Sadly, I seriously doubt that similar drivers should exist for Linux. What you can do, however, is to buy an external serial modem, which has somewhat greater chances to work with Linux. I bought one for about Rs.1700 from my local vendor. Quote:

i got gnokki to detect my nokia 6020
allix@allix:~$ gnokii --identify GNOKII Version 0.6.10 IMEI : 356240004873545 Manufacturer : Nokia Model : Nokia 6020 Revision : V 03.52 allix@allix:~$ allix@allix:~$ gnokii --getnetworkinfo GNOKII Version 0.6.10 Network : O2 (Guernsey) Network code : 234 10 LAC : 1045 Cell id : 6df4 allix@allix:~$ so far thats all i can do with it, i cannot see the logo, ringtones etc.. I connected through AT combatible device which does not support those features, so what is gnokii for i ask myself? |
Under fedora, I managed to get a motorola v600 working as a bluetooth modem usinmg the bluez libraries, that took some fiddling but it worked. I would imagine you'd get the same with infra red. Cables I wouldn't expect to work as they always seem to need a sepcific driver. IR and bluetooth seem to be a general standard, ie all mobiles are the same.
