How to use KDE4 tags

The tags feature of KDE4 made me excited, but I couldn't figure out how to use them. I can assign tags both to emails (in kmail) and files (using Dolphin), but when I tried searching for everything that's tagged non-"work" and "TODO" I failed.

I was able to display emails having a tag, if they are in the same folder. (I couldn't display emails not having a tag, or spread across several folders.)
I wasn't able to search for files using the tags at all.

Could someone tell me how to do this? Or point me to a tutorial?
