How to upgrade SUSE 8.2 2.4.20-4gb athlon kernel?

Never upgraded a kernel in my life....please explain in simple terms if possible?

It depends on which kernel you would like to update to.

Security updates are available through Yast Online Update (YOU). This is fully automatic.

But if you would like to update to kernel 2.6, this is not easy and I would recommend a system update to SuSE >9.1

You are right, these updates are not major version updates. Mostly they fix bugs or security issues.

Are you sure that you got an error message and not the usual notification that you need to re-install lilo after the update?

You save all your data and do a complete fresh installation. There are other ways to do it, but this one makes least trouble.

The error i got was:

Error installing kernel patch

Skip this patch or abort the update?

ERROR(You:rpm failed.) /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/8.2/rpm/i586/kernel-source-2.4.20.SuSE-129.i586.rpm

Any ideas???????

Hmm, the error came on the kernel-source update. Maybe the file was corrupted during download. You could delete the local file (or check the md5sum first, so you know if it is really corrupted) and run YOU again.
