How to upgrade a linux distro?

Hello. I īm new at linux and I want to know how to upgrade a lixu distro when there is a newer one. For example I have Kubuntu 7.04, if tomorrow there is Kubuntu 8, may I install it from the cd/dvd or from the package manager?
Thank you in advance

Both options should be available. A fresh install or upgrade from cd or through the package manager.

I have Edgy, not Feisty, but Kubuntu has an update manager in Adept which will notify you of new distro releases and help you update.

If no upgrade option is given, backup up your home directories and other important things like Konqueror book marks, configuration files and KWallet passwords. Do a fresh install and copy the home directories back . I would not include hidden directories in the home because those are often configuration files and bound to change. Good luck.

Hi. I think an easy way to update it would be using synaptic (you probably have a ksynaptic program, or whatever you use to install packages), and selecting the "mark all upgrades" option.

I've heard ubuntu upgrades very safely, but if you use another distro, and lose you x server, your kdm or something (you have only the terminal available), you will still (probably) have "aptitude". By which seaching maybe only for "kdm" (?) you should get your GUI back again.
