I cannot fully understand what you are saying, but I think you want to get grub to start at boot and allow you to choose between windows and linux.

I would recommend using the install cd you used for linux to rescue your system. It may be able to find both operating systems and reinstall grub on the mater boot record.

You do not need to reinstall Linux; only boot it and reinstall GRUB. You may also need to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst to allow you to boot to XP as well.

Your install CD may have a 'rescue' mode which you can use to boot; I don't use RHEL so I can't say anything other than you do not need to reinstall the system, only the bootloader.

I have also faced a similar problem. Follow these steps:
1) Boot your PC with XP CD... after few default options choose repair mode.. there at prompt you will find FIXMBR option. Run this command. This will boot your PC with XP only.

2) Now, boot your PC with RHEL 5 CD, go to rescue mode

chroot /mnt/sysimage
1)grub
2)root (hd0,0) .....(hd0,6)
In anyone you will find something like file system is ext2
3) setup (hd0)

This will rewrite ur /etc/grub/grub.conf

Try these,,, i sorted my problem through this.

VIKAS
