How To Update A Kernel

Can anyone tell what do you mean updating a kernel...
i have suse 10.2 installed ....
can i make it use 10.3 by updating the kernel...

tell me whole procedure and the place frm where i can get the new kernel..

the kernel is the very core of a distribution, just like any other program, that too can be upgraded. 10.3 is not a kernel. it might be a valid kernel version in 20 years, but no we're in the 2.6.23 region. to be honest the best answer to how to do it is to not do it... you haven't given any reasons as to why you'd want to and without a valid reason there's no point. you will not benefit. that said yast will presumably automate replacement packages when it has them.

Mr. there r some things u never havea valid reason for learning . you want to learn because u have the desire to learn and u will learn it any way....

ok if im not getting answer here i m going to learn it from somewhere else and then i will post a new how to update your kernel and then lets see how others don't learn it.

it doesn't matter what kernel version you have, suse 10.2 will still be 10.2 unless you upgrade it to 10.3.
to upgrade a kernel, I would compile a new kernel from kernel.org

I left Windows completely because of the WGA. I absolutely refuse to leave the running of my system to the vagaries of a corporate master determining that my system is illegal when I know that it is not. Not an option for me.

The other reason I left is that I found I was spending hours per week just running utilities to defrag, de-malware, de-spyware, de-piracy ware, de-spamware, etc. With Linux I got those hours back with no loss of security.

I also found that the overhead of running Windows made my computer run slower than it did with Linux.

Put the above together and leaving Windows was a no-brainer. I am not into computer games and I found a way to run most of the videos I wanted without Windows so why put up with all the crap. Scrapped Windows and have not missed it a bit.

I wanted a dual boot system to experiment a little with Linux but I didn't RTFM good enough and ended with a zero boot system. Since I had only a restoration disk for Windows XP and a full set of CentOS 4 disks, it was quite easy to leave Windows completely

It was unintended and by accident but using and administrating CentOS and Ubuntu was so much easier than anticipated that I got over my initial worries immediately. It's been more than a year since the big bang, I've tried a dozen distros and I'm using my computer better and more creatively than I ever did with Windows. I may want Windows back just to play all the games again I'd bought but as my main OS I'm very pleased with GNU/Linux/X/KDE based systems.

does it mean first i have to think whether for which distro i have to compile kernel then i have to compile...istn't it a distribution independent phenomena......

I have been Windows free since October and am loving it! Gutsy is good. I had a few challenges, but I am enjoying the learning curve ride.
