tar -zxvf <filename>

then you have to follow the build instructions in the directory that's created (look for a README or INSTALL and read them).

Usually ... it's

Code:

./configure
make
make install

Any app that you need to install will (most likely) have documentation in the tar.gz file itself. Do,

tar zxvf filename

This would create a directory. go into the directory and there might be a README and/or a INSTALL file, which would have the details on installing.

In suse then you should have ARk installed. right click on the tar.gz/bz2 and go down to extract then choose an option.
and to install
bash configure
make
su
make install
