You need to format the partitions of that distributions, so that the data they contain is deleted, and reconfigure your boot loader.

If you are attempting to install a new OS then it would delete the partition during the Linux Installation CD being run. During the partitioning the disk, it will ask to :
1. Delete all the partitions.
2. Delete all the Linux Installation
3.Keep the earlier partition and install on free space.

So you can choose therein to install in whatever way you want.
