How to surf my LAN....

Hi,
I am using RHEL4. I tried a lot to surf my LAN but no result.
I just want to know, is there any software like "IPscanner" or "LAN surffer" for LINUX?

or any interface that will list up all the alive hosts in my LAN, as well as permit me to access there shared documents?

please help........

What OSes are the othe machines using?

There are various ways of detecting other machines in Linux eg
ping
nmap
nslookup
dig

The other qn is, do you need to actually share files, or just get/put copies?
To get/put, use scp/sftp

to share there is
NFS - for Unix style systems
Samba - for MS style systems

we need more details....
