How to start up in to command line?

okay I am using Fedora and one of the things to forget to check was that I wanted it to start up in to text mode not start up into the GUI. Is there some config file I can go to and switch this? any help would be great thanks!

edit /etc/inittab and edit the line that says "id:5:initdefault:" to "id:3:initdefault:"

Thanks, that was useful for me too.

Is there any way to specify this at boot time? TIA from a noobee.

If your machine has lilo, when it boots to a listing of choices (linux.failsafe, windows, etc) hit the ESC key. It will then give you a boot: command. Type linux 3 and hit enter. Next time you boot it will run as normal, this is a one time method.

Also, linux 1 will take it to run level 1, which is single user. This is where you may (or may not) be able to fix a missing root password.

irlandes, thanks for your reply. I haven't had a chance to set it up yet (It normally boots GRUB, but I'm interested in hacking LILO too). Didn't want you to think your help has been ignored.

Cheers - DaPi
